the Bitch in the house

The ePrince is on the losingest football team in the 5aII division.  That’s okay because losing and then working hard to overcome the personal and public blow are characterbuilding qualities.  I guess that my concern over his being on this team in particular is that his coach is a giant butthead.  I imagine the guy was probably a likable meathead when he was young, but the coach has never quite grown up so the negative personality traits that go along with being a butthead are pretty entrenched.   Coach is fairly abusive to the boys; throwing tempertantrums in practice, getting kicked out of games by referees, and de-padding players on the sidelines when he doesn’t like their performances.  This kind of leadership is ugly and frustrating to watch.  Evenmore, I’d like nothing better than to take my ePrince out of this environment, but he wants to play football.  And my guy wisely tells me that this kind of coaching is temporary, there’s J/Varsity next season; next year.

And then I watched the teleeversion of the news yesterday.  I hate the trite reporting for  sitcomlaughtrackshortattentionspandumbeddown audiences.  So as a general rule I figure that if it is worthy of my attention John Stewart or Steven Colbert will mention it and if I haven’t already read about it, I’ll investigate further because then at least I’ll get an intelligent laugh out of the atrocities in the world.  And, true to form, the broadcast was filled with sillyness and bizarro blips and bleeps from other people’s lives.  And then there was the republican presidential candidate who hails from my homestate.  Does anyone really believe this guy wants to be president?!  I mean, really?   Some largesse blunders of this campaign include lack of VP vetting and picking the formerbeautyqueenpiginlipstick (if she hangs with the pigs, acts like them, and oinks like them, why can’t we call her a pig in lipstick – coz she never forgets the lipstick!); suspending the campaign to f%ck up the economic negotiations; and then he lets his tiarasidekick (that he is not married to) start talking on the campaign trail.  These are some big gaffs.  The lack of vision and rash decisions also lead to easy frustrations which explode out like rude temper tantrums on a football field.

And now that you’ve read all of this, I’m sure you’re wondering how the wouldbepresidential  maverick is connected to the losing Mustangs.  The link is related to the maverickesque qualities that have played out over and again in the lacklustre presidential candidate’s career.  A maverick is really an unbranded range animal… that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter. Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence sometimes just makes you anti-social.  You know, unwilling or unable to associate in a normal or friendly way with other people or, antagonistic, hostile, or unfriendly toward others by being menacing or threatening, and really just opposed or detrimental to the social order or the principles on which society is constituted (or so the dictionary says).  And that is the connection:  the frosh Mustang coach is also a maverick – a holdover from the old guard of footballcoaching where bullying was the norm; just as the maverick is an old mustang – rode hard and put up wet.  There is a cultural revolution that sneaked right up on us when we were all too busy watching teevee.  The marching creep has been similar to the economic crisis that has been swirling around us for many months and even years.  The manner in which we’ve become accustomed to living is on the brink of collapse.  Maybe the markets won’t come crashing down around us, but at the very least, we have to recognize that the way we’ve been going isn’t going to work for anyone in the very near future.  Bullying through, as Americans are apt to do, misses the mark.  We’ve got to figure out how to relate without the meathead antics, without the loner processing.  Socially, we’ve tried to buck branding that limited our nationalistic possibilities and now it is time to rethink how we are in the world.

Have we been biding our time until the next season, the next election cycle as the ePrince does?
